Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys, and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate them?into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual.
These unusual cufflinks from the Victorian era (ca1880) era a wonderful example of the?Shakudo?art! Both cufflinks have unique figural motifs that are independent, yet complimentary to each other.?Beautiful silver and gold accents are inlaid into the Shakudo surface, creating a striking mixed metals design with dramatic contrasts. The Shakudo plaques are mounted on sterling silver backs, which are stamped "STERLING 950" and "MADE IN JAPAN" on the reverse. Hinged airplane backs are attached behind the shakudo plaques, allowing for secure wear. These unique cufflinks display exemplary artistry and are perfect for the Shakudo collector!
Measurements: Each Shakudo?plaque measures approximately 1 1/4" long, 5/8" wide, and are approximately 1/4" thick. The posts on the back are 3/4" long, and the airplane backs measure 3/4" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the cufflinks is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the?sterling silver setting or to either of the Shakudo plaques. The inlaid mixed metals accents show normal some signs of fading that are commensurate with age, and do not detract from the beauty of the design. On the sterling setting is an untouched patina, which provides an antiqued appearance and adds to the character of the piece.
